This is an emphatic letter of recommendation that I can give wholeheartedly after observing Cedric Tyree Powell operate as a Chinese tutor for my 13 year old son. Mr. Powell is a professional and it shows in all that he poured into this particular student. A hands on and involved instructor, Mr. Powell was able to minimize the less exciting, rote aspects of learning a new language, while he maximized the openness to curiosity and expansion and confidence building.
Mr. Powell showed wisdom in teaching not just about a language, but also about a people and a culture. He even shared authentic artifacts that added an additional tangible dimension to the instruction. His passion is contagious and certainly eye-opening. What started as a young teenager receiving private instruction from a capable tutor, has now transformed into an entire family of five, excited about visiting this ancient nation, as a result of hearing of the tales and other interesting information via my son. Mr. Powell’s passion is indeed contagious.
Lastly I must comment on the fact that Mr. Powell always comes prepared and is very accommodating in working with our family schedule. He also gives above and beyond of his time, expertise, and enthusiasm in the classroom. My son’s relationship with Mr. Powell has made him a stronger and more confident student and has pushed him to raise the bar of academic achievement. I believe his instructor’s personal commitment to excellence and growth, are key factors contributing to my son’s progress. The dedicated instruction in the classroom coupled with Mr. Powell’s zest for travel and thinking “out of the box” have shown my son the benefits and possibilities of a life with no limitations. Mr. Powell is a fine example to any young person who would dare to believe he can do anything, go anywhere, or be anybody – and thrive in the experience!
