Melissa knew that a goal of mine is to spend birthdays in foreign countries. On May 19th, 2010, she surprised me with a birthday trip to Jamaica. All who were in on the surprise did well with keeping the secret. I had no clue of where we were going until I reached the international departures terminal and looked at the upcoming departures board.
Since birthday surprises is the topic; my sincere thanks goes to my students who surprised me with two birthday cakes on the night before my birthday trip. So I taught them how to sing Happy Birthday in Chinese and we had a party.
My first time in Jamaica was spent on an all-inclusive resort in Negril. After this trip, I genuinely feel like I've been to Jamaica.
We stayed 4 days at the Emerald View Villa in Montego Bay. It was a 17 room guesthouse, located near the top of a hill, with a great beach view. More importantly, the personal service given by Jennifer, Duran and Christine are what really made the trip extra special. (Christine's breakfast of Akee & Saltfish, callaloo, and fried dumplings was delicious.)
The 20 minute drive from Montego Bay's main strip to the Villa gave you a feel for real life in Jamaica and also made the opportunity to mingle with the locals a lot easier. Stops were made at the Fish Hut (the cracked conch, is all I can say), Scotchie's (a jerk spot/bar), and the bar/pool hall at the bottom of the hill.
